How to draw with your sewing machine - lesson 3

This third lesson in the series explores how to create layers with your appliqué drawing.

Layering applique with free motion machine embroidery is an essential technique to master as it allows you to build up more intricate drawings. When creating a layered drawing I always sketch out the drawing first and then create shape templates from card so that I can play around with postioning the different layers so that I know the order to sew them in.

When using layering you can use bondaweb if you want to. You can see how to do this in “How to draw with the sewing machine - lessson 2.” Just remember to attach the bondaweb to the fabric first before you cut any shapes out.

The following video has three layers for the owls eyes. This is probably a good rule of thumb for the maximum amount of layers to use as any more will start to look a bit bulky and be harder to sew.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and have great fun experimenting with this next step in your free motion embroidery journey. Do please tag #daisyknots if you post on social media so that I can see your amazing work.
